Garage 48 Food in cooperation with TFTAK!

Are you passionate about a more sustainable future for Food? Then, Garage48 Food is open for registration!

WHAT?

In co-organization with Garage48, Estonian University of Life Sciences and Estonian Research Council, and in partnership with Polli Horticultural Research Center, TFTAK, TalTech, BioCC, and Tartu Biotechnology Park (EIT Food Hub in Estonia), a second food technology hackathon will take place 27-29 January 2023 in Estonia, to find solutions to different challenges in the food industry.

This year we have something extraordinary planned for you! There will be actual food tasting at the hackathon, so tell us about the Food you want to develop, come and run the tests you need at our partner laboratories, and surprise us with new tastes!

HOW AND WHERE?

Physical food related solutions

We welcome science-driven ideas until 15 November and selected idea owners will have 2-month access to our partner laboratories with the necessary mentorship to run tests and develop their product!

During this 2-month period, registered individuals (marketers, designers, etc.) have time to apply to join this idea on Eventornado. The product owner will bring his/her prototype for tasting to the hackathon in January and within 48 hours, his/her team has to create a business and marketing plan, a concept for packaging and some branding, together with a clickable prototype of their product (a mobile app, landing page).

The 2-month laboratory access will take place in TFTAK, BioCC, TalTech, Polli Horticultural Center and the food laboratory of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Software development-related solutions

Teams must develop a clickable prototype in 48 hours. We welcome software-related ideas until 20 January.

Garage48 Food hackathon 2022/23 on January 27-29 is an entirely ON-SITE event at the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu.

The Opinion Festival is a meeting place for all layers of society, giving a platform for different worldviews. Its mission is to improve debate culture and civic education. The Festival is free of charge and open to everyone in Estonia and beyond who would like to discuss and tackle issues that matter for all of us.

Two festival days are filled with super tight programme to meet face to face to share topics and point of views that we really care about. TFTAK cares and for the second year in a row, we were part of a panel discussion.

This year, #teamTFTAK food scientist Rain Kuldjärv discussed “What do we eat during crisis?”.

Other panelists at this discussion were:

  • Triin Kõrgmaa (CEO of Salvest)
  • Urmas Kruuse (Minister of Rural Affairs)
  • Ruve Schank (former advisor of FAO)

The discussion was about how to ensure the food security in the event of a pandemic, war, or natural disaster? What alternative options for food production are already being explored? What can the state do to ensure that high-quality food reaches people in a crisis? What can entrepreneurs do? The talk was about concerns that may hit us soon. What is happening in the field of food innovation.

This panel was organized by Estonian Research Council. The recording of this panel discussion can be found and heard from here.

Opinion Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary, and it is important to mention, that the festival is green and environmentally friendly.

You are warmly welcome to join the festival next year, 11.-12. August 2023!
